Photo Tour for DSLR, Mirror-less, and iPhone Photographers

This 4-day tour is jam packed with great photo opportunities! We'll visit Fonthill Castle, Eastern State Penitentiary, Longwood Gardens, and Coal Pier 18 along the Delaware River (aka, Graffiti Underground).

Special iPhone Component

I'll be available throughout the 4-day weekend to coach, answer questions, and offer processing suggestions. On Sunday afternoon, we'll spend 2 hours reviewing iPhone processing techniques and working on the images you've captured during the weekend. Once you're registered, I'll send a list of recommended apps and accessories that will be useful for capturing and processing images on this tour.

About the Locations

Location 1: Fonthill Castle

The centerpiece of this photo tour is Fonthill Castle in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, about an hour's drive north of Philadelphia.

The 44-room castle built by Henry Mercer between 1908 and 1912 is a photographer’s dream!

The building is a mix of Medieval, Gothic, and Byzantine architectural styles and is adorned with Mercer’s beautiful Moravian tiles that were made during the American Arts and Crafts Movement.

Each of the castle’s 27 levels – that’s right! – is full of art and furniture collected by Mercer. He actually named each room! The castle is so quaint that one expects hobbits to appear at any moment. (Fees included in cost of workshop.)

Location 2: Eastern State Penitentiary

Once considered the model for modern penal institutions, ESP is now closed as a prison but open to visitors and photographers.

We’ll have access to cell blocks, the “yard,” and various wings of the prison, and will be able to photograph the cell made famous by one of the prison’s most notorious guests, Al Capone.  (All fees included in cost of workshop.)

Location 3: Longwood Gardens

There are countless opportunities for landscape, close-up, macro, and color photography in both outdoor and indoor settings at Longwood Gardens.
The land was owned and gardened by one of the most influential gardeners of the 20th Century, Pierre S. DuPont, who adorned the land with gardens, topiaries, fountains, and exotic plant life.

Today, Longwood is one of the most beautiful gardens in the world.

Location 4: Graffiti Underground (Coal Piers on the Delaware River)

All that remains of Coal Pier 18, where coal was once loaded by rail onto barges on the Delaware River, are the huge arched concrete supports on which the trains once ran.

Today this abandoned site sports a plethora of urban graffiti made even more interesting by the repeating arches of these pylons.
