Provincetown, located at the very tip of Cape Cod, is a photographer’s paradise. From the picturesque wharf area, to the beautiful scenic areas close by, it’s easy to fill your cards and phones with many wonderful images at one of the Cape’s most popular destinations. If street and people photography are your thing, Provincetown has that too.
Betty Wiley will be repeating her popular Provincetown and Outer Cape workshop in September, and for the third year working together, award-winning iPhoneographer and teacher, Rad Drew, will be co-leading. Rad's creative iPhone work (examples of which you can see on the Gallery Tab on Rad’s website) has received recognition in numerous international competitions and has been exhibited in galleries around the world. Rad also shoots infrared and traditional camera photography, and is a popular instructor for the Topaz webinars.
We'll photograph the popular wharf area, capturing beautiful boat reflections, detail shots and much, much more. We'll also photograph several lighthouses in the area and visit the beautiful sand dunes. A block of rooms has been reserved for our group at a local hotel overlooking the bay. In addition to Provincetown, we’ll also be photographing other areas nearby on the outer Cape, including Truro and Wellfleet.
Our workshop will begin on Monday evening and will conclude Friday morning after our sunrise shoot. On Monday afternoon, we'll gather for a brief meet and greet before we head out for sunset. The following morning we will be up early as we will want to capture the best light.
Afterwards, we'll grab breakfast and continue on our journey to explore the little nooks and crannies of Provincetown. We’ll have lunch and then head to our hotel for the creative processing session of our workshop. Tips and techniques will also be demonstrated for optimizing images. After a break, we will then head out to another beautiful location nearby. Dinner will follow at one of the many wonderful dining locations that Provincetown is known for.
The following mornings we will again be up early for our sunrise shoots with breakfast afterwards followed by lunch and our processing sessions where you will have an opportunity to work on your own images. Rad and Betty will work with you to get the most out of your photography and answer any questions that you might have.
Weather permitting, participants will have an opportunity to go out on an optional whale watch during this workshop. In addition to photographing humpback whales (and possibly other species), this trip out to Stellwagen bank (where the whales often feed) also provides a great opportunity to see and photograph two hard-to-reach lighthouses, Long Point Lighthouse and Wood End Lighthouse.
This trip is highly recommended for those who are interested and September can be a great month to see lots of whale activity.
If you've caught the iPhone photography bug, or simply want to learn how to get the most out of the camera that's always with you, Rad will show you not only how to capture great images, but also how to process them using a host of apps for creative results. In the field and in the classroom, Rad will be demonstrating and coaching you on how to:

- process your images to improve clarity, drama and impact
- process traditional camera images on your iPhone or iPad
- create great HDR images, simply and easily
- use the resident panorama app to capture impressive panos
- create painterly-looking or vintage-looking images
Rad will provide a list of recommended apps and accessories to all attendees prior to the workshop. Provincetown will be a great place for use of iPhones, and we will be shooting with both our iPhones and our regular cameras.
This workshop is always a sell-out and is expected to fill quickly.
About the Instructors
Betty and Rad have been friends for several years, after meeting on a photo expedition to Cuba in 2013. Since then they have photographed the east coast together as well as other locations, including The Palouse, Fonthill Castle, in Doylestown, PA, Longwood Gardens, and Eastern State Penitentiary.

Betty Wiley is an award-winning free-lance photographer who resides on Cape Cod in the small town of Yarmouth Port. Originally from Las Vegas, Nevada, she and her husband moved to Massachusetts in the early 1980’s. She is a frequent contributor to various local magazines, including Cape Cod magazine, Chatham magazine, Cape Cod Guide, South Shore Living and others. She has numerous covers to her credit and her images were featured on the cover of Chatham magazine for 5 years in a row. She believes that good light is key to a successful image and she often heads out in the morning before sunrise or in the evening as she explores the riches of the Cape with her camera. When storms move through the area, she grabs her gear to capture the dramatic clouds and light as the skies begin to clear. Betty conducts numerous photography and processing workshops on the Cape and is a frequent instructor for the Cape Cod Art Association. Rad A. Drew is a professional photographer who lives with his wife, Nancy Lee, in historic Irvington, Indiana, on the east side of Indianapolis. Although a traditional camera photographer much of his life, since 2010 he's been an iPhone photography enthusiast. His creative iPhone images have received numerous awards and have made their way into galleries and juried international competitions showing in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, New York, Toronto, Collingwood, Seattle, and Melbourne. He is author of the fine art books, In Good Light, Images of the Circle City and Rural Indiana, A Beauty all its Own, and is a contributor to today’s most comprehensive volume of iPhone instruction, The Art of iPhone Photography: Creating Great Photos and Art on Your iPhone.
